I'm doing a lab project extracting DNA from peas. I know the liquid detergent acts as a surfactant, but don't quite understand what that does. Does it separate the fats and oils from the solution?

Answer

The liquid detergent dissolves the membranes of the cell allowing the DNA to get out of the cell.
