Biotechnology Resources Online

Mama Ji's Molecular Kitchen

This site has lots of information about commonly used molecular
techniques, explaining what they are and how they work, written in simple terms.

BINAS (The Biosafety Information Network and Advisory Service)

BINAS is involved with monitoring global regulatory issues dealing with developments in biotechnology.

Concord Biologica's GenScope

This is a computer program that allows you to simulate genetics and heredity at the ecosystem level as well as at the molecular level.

The Office of Biotechnology at Iowa State University

Iowa State University's site offers educational resources in biotechnology.

Fralin Biotechnology Outreach

Fralin sponsors an annual biotechnology education conference and other Professional Development opportunities for high school and college biology educators. Fralin also helps establish Teacher-ScientistPartnerships, collaborations designed to help high school students understand current advances in biology and biotechnology.

Access Excellence

Created by the biotech company Genentech, Access Excellence includes a rich collection of science news and issues and a forum of classroom ideas for teachers.

National Center for Biotechnology Information

The Center, a branch of the National Institute of Health, offers information regarding the human genome including gene sequences, their chromosomal locations, and the genetic disorders associated with them. The site also has an informative tutorial of the molecular biology of cancer cells as well as research projects in biotechnology that are currently in progress at the center.

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory

The labortory's DNA Learning Center offers public educational information regarding the techniques and materials used in molecular genetics research that includes tutorials such as an introduction to the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The site also gives information on student/teacher workshops and describes the experiments involved in the workshops.

Stanford Human Genome Center

The Stanford Human Genome Center of the Stanford University maintains and active education program. The Center provides resources and references for topics such as medicine, cell/molecular biology and evolution.g.

National Human Genome Research Institute

The Institute, a division of the National Institute of Health, offers information describing what the Human Genome Project (HGP) is, when it began, and the goals of the project. This site also provides links to mapping/sequence databases, the participating genome centers throughout the world, and resources for genetics education. In addition, the site provides a NEWS link that highlights the latest gene discoveries as a result of the HGP.

Genetic Information and Patient Services, Inc. (GAPS)

GAPS is a non-profit charity founded for the purpose of making easy to understand information on genetic disorders and birth defects readily available to the public, particularly to new or prospective parents.

The Northwestern Universtiy Center for Biotechnology

Northwestern University Center for Biotechnology offers an interdisciplinary masters degree and seminar series in biotechnology. While the program is not geared to high school students, the website has an extensive list of biotechnology companies and links to useful information sources.
